The Uninsured Division (UD) is a division of the State of Maryland administered by Maryland Auto Insurance. The UD handles claims in which a Maryland resident has been injured as a result of an accident caused by another person who has no insurance to cover those injuries.
A recent case involved a single vehicle crash in Baltimore County in which a young mother and her son were passengers in her roommate’s vehicle. The group was heading home from a night with friends. Heavy fog and wet roads made the ride home challenging. While following GPS directions, the driver lost control and hit the median curb, plunging the vehicle down an embankment and into the woods.
Following the crash, the mother and child passenger were transported to the hospital. The child was uninjured. However, the mother fractured her upper arm bone on her dominant arm. She was placed in a cast and sling. She endured four months of medical treatment and was not able to work.
The vehicle they were traveling in at the time of the crash was uninsured. There was no insurance coverage to pay for medical bills or lost wages due to the injury.
Since the mother did not own a vehicle and did not qualify for coverage through any policy in her household, she qualified to make an uninsured claim through the UD. The Uninsured Division stepped in to help the mother and son settle their medical claims against the uninsured driver and pay their medical bills. Fortunately for the victims in this case, their medical bills did not exceed the limits of coverage available through the UD. By statute, the UD can pay up to $30,000 in bodily injury for one individual and a maximum of $60,000 per accident for bodily injury for more than one person. This is an example of how the Uninsured Division fulfills its mission of providing coverage for injured Marylanders who have no other insurance coverage for injuries sustained in a crash.
