“There is a need to educate the Latino community about insurance. We explain to our clients why they need insurance and discuss the different things they need to consider,” says David Rosario of David Rosario State Farm Agency, with offices in Baltimore and Sykesville.

While a shared language provides a foundation for communication, cultural nuances can present challenges in explaining complex insurance concepts, explains Monica Pacheco of Pacheco and Associates in Gaithersburg. “Even though we speak the same language, cultural differences can affect how people understand insurance,” she explains. Monica has prioritized building a diverse team to ensure that clients from all backgrounds receive the best service possible. “I try to understand the customer’s insurance needs and personal concerns,” she says. “I explain how insurance works, the benefits, state regulations, claim processes, and why the insured must add all drivers in a household to their policies.”

These Maryland Auto agents have a common goal of educating their consumers. “Seeing the community’s needs, the lack of insurance knowledge, and the deficiency of agents providing education to our clients has demanded that my agency increase its participation in educational communications to Hispanic clients,” Monica explains.

“My team and I look at ourselves as educators. We take our time to make sure that our customers understand what coverages are in place. ‘Bueno Barrato y Bonito’ (good, cheap, and pretty) does not always work with insurance,” says David.

“The needs of my clients come first. As Hispanic agents, we are always willing to help our people and provide them with information. When a customer purchases a vehicle, they look for basic insurance coverage to meet the state requirements and to save money. We always make sure to explain the different coverage options available,” says Kimberly Hernandez of State Insurance in Lanham.

The way the Hispanic community communicates with insurance carriers is also evolving. “Our community has become well-versed in technology. They obtain quotes and complete applications through their smartphones,” David says. “My policyholders are using their phones to access their personal information, policies, accounts, and more. It’s the new way of conducting business,” Monica adds.

These Maryland Auto agents also encourage those new to the country to empower themselves through learning. “Inform yourself on laws regarding driver’s licenses in the United States. Once you have a valid driver’s license, you can buy car insurance,” Kimberly advises. Once a driver is eligible to purchase insurance, they can then purchase a vehicle. “Learn the steps in owning, registering, and insuring your car. Always make sure you understand the cost of insuring a vehicle before buying. Once it is purchased, you must insure it,” David says.
