The Uninsured Division (UD) is a division of the State of Maryland administered by Maryland Auto Insurance. The UD handles claims in which someone is injured in an accident caused by another person who has no insurance to cover those injuries. Here is a collection of case studies in which the UD has helped innocent Maryland residents who were injured in a crash.
A recent case Baltimore City involved a young woman who was struck by a vehicle while walking home from work. Security footage from a nearby business captured the hit-and-run vehicle striking the pedestrian, who was in a marked crosswalk at the time. The SUV was registered in Virginia but belonged to a Maryland resident and was later determined to be uninsured.

Investigators repeatedly attempted to contact the owner at the address listed on the Virginia registration. On two separate visits, the investigator even located the vehicle parked at the residence. Photos documented the car’s distinctive features. Despite these efforts, the owner remained unresponsive to all communication attempts, including those from the insurance adjuster, the victim’s attorney, and the court.
The victim sustained injuries to her face and jaw and lost several teeth. Her medical bills totaled over $15,000 and she would incur additional medical bills due to continued orthodontic treatment.
She was eligible for assistance from the UD since she did not own a home or vehicle and did not have access to other means of insurance.
The hit-and-run driver failed to appear at the trial for this case. However, the claimant provided testimony on the accident, her injuries, and pain and suffering. She was awarded the full $30,000 available from the UD for her injuries and pain and suffering. The Uninsured Division was able to step in and pay the $30,000, and will now work to recover those funds from the uninsured driver.
