The Uninsured Division (UD) is a division of the State of Maryland administered by Maryland Auto Insurance. The UD handles claims in which someone is injured in an accident caused by another person who has no insurance to cover those injuries.
The UD recently stepped in to assist a family who suffered a devastating loss due to a hit-and-run accident.
A pedestrian was tragically struck and killed by a large truck when walking on the shoulder of a road in Western Maryland. The truck then fled the scene without stopping.
A woman who witnessed the horrific event promptly called 911 and followed the truck to provide authorities with crucial vehicle information. In addition, a nearby business captured the incident through surveillance footage.
Unfortunately, the victim had no personal insurance to cover medical expenses or funeral costs. In such cases, the UD plays a vital role. By statute, the UD provides coverage of up to $30,000 in bodily injury for one individual and a maximum of $60,000 per accident for bodily injury for more than one person in a covered loss.
A trial date was set, but the defendant failed to appear. A default judgment was entered against them. The UD paid the full $30,000 policy limit to the deceased pedestrian’s spouse and will pursue recovery from the at-fault driver.
This case highlights the UD’s commitment to protecting Marylanders and ensuring that victims of uninsured motorist accidents who have no other insurance coverage receive the compensation they deserve.
