The Uninsured Division (UD) is a division of the State of Maryland administered by Maryland Auto Insurance. The UD handles claims in which someone is injured in an accident caused by another person who has no insurance to cover those injuries.
The UD received a claim from a Baltimore City resident alleging injuries sustained from flying debris following a three-vehicle collision in front of her residence.
The initial police report indicated that the accident was the result of a hit-and-run. Unfortunately, the woman who was struck by debris did not have health insurance. As she did not own a vehicle or the home, there was auto or homeowner coverage to kick in and help with her medical bills. So, she turned to the Uninsured Division for help.
During its investigation, the UD reviewed dash camera footage from one of the involved vehicles, which revealed that the hit-and-run vehicle had briefly stopped at the scene. A witness obtained a partial license plate number and stated the driver admitted to operating his girlfriend’s vehicle before fleeing.
A subsequent investigation, including license plate and social media searches, identified the vehicle owner and the driver, who was her boyfriend. It also revealed that the at-fault vehicle had active insurance coverage at the time of the accident.
The witness positively identified the owner’s boyfriend as the driver responsible for the crash from a social media photograph pulled by investigators. As a result of the positive identification and the revelation that there was coverage on the vehicle, the injuries sustained by the UD claimant were covered by the vehicle owner’s auto insurance company.
Although the Uninsured Division did not make a payment on this claim, the UD investigation ultimately resulted in coverage for the victim’s medical bills.
