The Uninsured Division (UD) is a division of the State of Maryland administered by Maryland Auto Insurance. The UD handles claims in which someone is injured in an accident caused by another person who has no insurance to cover those injuries.

The UD recently stepped in to assist a family with medical bills after their child was struck by an uninsured vehicle when crossing the street in a school zone. After the crash, the car fled the scene.

The child sustained significant injuries resulting in medical bills totaling over $60,000.

A witness to the crash obtained the tag number of the fleeing vehicle and contacted the Baltimore City Police. The police later found the hit-and-run driver and issued a citation.

Through an investigation by the UD, it was determined that the hit-and-run vehicle was uninsured and that there was no other insurance to cover medical costs. A lawsuit was filed against the uninsured driver.

After evaluating the injury claim, the UD offered the full amount of coverage available, $30,000. (In Uninsured Division claims, the statute provides coverage of up to $30,000 in bodily injury for one individual and a maximum of $60,000 per accident for bodily injury for more than one person in a covered loss.)

The uninsured driver will then be responsible for reimbursing the UD for the amount paid to the injured child’s family.

This case highlights the UD’s commitment to protecting Marylanders and ensuring that victims of uninsured motorist accidents who have no other insurance coverage are not financially burdened by expenses through no fault of their own.
