FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Al Redmer, Jr. Named Executive Director of Maryland Auto Insurance
May 1, 2020 (Baltimore) Al Redmer, Jr. has been named the new Executive Director of Maryland Auto Insurance. The announcement was made today by Maryland Auto Board Chairman Robert L. McKinney. Mr. Redmer is currently serving as Maryland Insurance Commissioner. He will join Maryland Auto Insurance on May 18, 2020. “We are pleased and excited to welcome Commissioner Redmer to lead Maryland Auto into the future.” said Mr. McKinney.
Al Redmer, Jr. is highly respected in insurance circles as well as Maryland State Government. He has served as Maryland Insurance Commissioner during two separate appointments- most recently since January 2015, and previously from June 2003 through late 2005. Redmer is Maryland’s longest serving Insurance Commissioner. Prior to his initial appointment as Insurance Commissioner, Mr. Redmer served three terms in the Maryland House of Delegates.
Redmer also brings a wealth of private-sector experience having managed Redmer Insurance Group, LLC, and owned Redmer Financial Group. His business experience also includes positions as partner and president of Landmark Insurance & Financial Group and as Chief Executive Officer of Coventry Health Care of Delaware, Inc.
Executive Director Mark McCurdy announced his retirement to the Maryland Auto Insurance Board of Trustees in 2019. Thereafter, a search committee of the Board was appointed to solicit and interview candidates for the Executive Director position. Chairman McKinney noted, “There were many outstanding candidates, but Al’s knowledge of insurance combined with his experience in Annapolis made him the ideal candidate”.
Mr. McCurdy has spent the final months of his 38 year career leading Maryland Auto through the Covid-19 pandemic. “When I agreed to stay until the new Executive Director arrived, I had no idea that would involve transitioning the entire organization to a virtual work environment in order to keep operations fully functioning during an unprecedented crisis. It has certainly been an interesting time and I am so proud of how the organization has responded,” he said.
Chairman McKinney noted, “Mark has been an outstanding leader. When he took the helm in 2015 our financial condition was in a downward trend. Under Mark’s leadership, we’ve witnessed vast improvements in operations, personnel and client services. All of these efficiencies have benefited Maryland Auto’s fiscal health and ensures that we can continue our mission.”
Among McCurdy’s major accomplishments as Executive Director was the creation of Maryland’s “FineFix” program. FineFix, helped over 23,000 Marylanders to return to the roads, opening up employment opportunities and helping employers and the State’s economic well-being. McCurdy’s innovative efforts also lowered the effective cost of auto policies by creating an installment plan, offering a non-pip policy, and highlighting educational efforts to help people get insured. “We will miss his innovative mind and collaborative style” said McKinney.
